Artwork 'The Lys'

Paul Debacker

Inner garden city hall Wervik

This courtyard presents a very powerful harmonizing design that ensures that the various disjointed construction phases of City Hall are visually hidden. The garden makes it look necessary a cohesive whole. The haphazard plantings of Gleditsia triacanthos ‘Skyline’ offer a contemplative atmosphere here along with the water. The sculpture is by Wervik sculptor Paul Debacker and is called “De Leie. It is therefore literally placed in the water, which may also symbolize the Lys here. This garden is a fine example of contemporary garden art in the heart of Wervik.

Andy, I was at Wervik City Hall today for my change of address. Surely the courtyard garden of City Hall is tremendously beautiful. The curved river, the grass, the statues … ! What about the trees! They have a beautiful combination of colors. That must be a mighty added value for the people working there. And for the new Wervikans who come to register with the population. What a reception!
