For the children’s cemetery within the existing Ruggeveld Cemetery in Antwerp, we designed a place of peace and shelter. The design consists of several distinct chambers, each with its own function and form of ash interment. Together, they create an intimate and protected environment where farewell and remembrance take center stage.
At the heart of the site lies the farewell space: a quiet, enclosed garden for leave-taking, centered around a monumental tree, rock formations, and ferns that evoke a gentle, almost fairytale-like atmosphere. Within this natural setting, the farewell however heavy the moment, finds a warm and comforting framework. The design seeks to soften remembrance and goodbye by bringing together silence, nature, and beauty.
