Design vision for Commonwealth Cemetery, Malbork (PL)

CLIENT

Commonwealth War Graves Commission

At the request of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, a design vision was drawn up for the Commonwealth AR Cemetery in Malbork, Poland. This vision is based on respect for the historical and architectural heritage of the cemetery and aims to enhance the tranquility and dignity of the site. An important part of this vision is to replace the existing cemetery wall with a new wall designed in the style and materiality of the original Commonwealth architecture. This reconnects with the historical identity of the cemetery and restores architectural coherence.

In addition, the design vision proposes to narrow the existing bicycle and walking path that runs alongside the cemetery. This intervention will create more space for the cemetery itself. A hedge will be planted around the rows of graves along the existing perimeter wall. This hedge will soften the appearance of the wall, refocusing attention within the cemetery on the graves and the landscape. The green buffer will contribute to a serene and subdued atmosphere that matches the character of the site. The existing monuments in the cemetery will be fully preserved and integrated into the design vision. The design respects their existing position and significance within the whole.
