Commissioned by the municipal council of Galmaarden, a master plan was drawn up for the redevelopment and future vision of the four municipal cemeteries: Vollezele, Galmaarden, Tollembeek, and Hernout. This master plan stems from a clear ambition: to transform the cemeteries into green, serene, and low-maintenance places where remembrance and contemplation take center stage.
The core of this design process was greening and depaving, with attention to a sustainable layout that reduces the maintenance burden for the municipality. In addition to these practical objectives, the integration of a new memorial and farewell area was also an important part of the assignment.
For each cemetery, a separate master plan was developed, tailored to the character and context of the location. The municipality of Galmaarden ultimately started with the implementation of a first phase in Galmaarden, carried out in-house. This provided the initial step toward the broader vision of redeveloping the cemeteries of Galmaarden in a respectful, future-oriented, and sustainable way.
