Masterplan for the Saint Amandus Psychiatric Center Site in Beernem

With the master plan for the grounds of the Psychiatric Center Sint-Amandus in Beernem, we aim to create a people-oriented environment. The design emphasizes harmony, experience, and encounters, without losing sight of practical needs. The current situation, which is too focused on purely functional aspects such as asphalt roads and parking areas, will make way for a greener and more inviting whole. The entrance to the reception building will be redesigned into a dignified gateway with a green parking area and stately avenues. The garden between the reception building and the administrative building will be transformed into a cohesive park that connects with the neo-Gothic buildings and invites visitors to rest and contemplation.

The design deliberately opts for classical forms and a new, logical layout of circulation, creating the impression that the site has always been arranged in this way. People are at the heart of the project: residents, staff, and visitors should be able to recognize themselves, orient easily, and feel proud of their daily environment.

In the short term, the focus lies on visible improvements that immediately make a difference: a green entrance with a welcoming forecourt, a functional yet soft parking area, and a park zone that harmoniously connects the different buildings. These interventions will allow visitors, residents, and staff to experience the site in a new way—more open, greener, and calmer.

In the long term, the master plan builds further on this foundation. The structural greenery, stately avenues, and formal squares will be extended across the entire site. This will create a coherent whole in which the neo-Gothic architecture is highlighted even more, and the grounds evolve into a contemporary park environment that respects its historical context. The ultimate goal is a sustainable landscape that is not only functional and pleasant today but also offers future generations a safe and inspiring environment.
