The design of the master plan for the environmental layout of the Oosthove site was developed within the quality chamber by Andy Malengier, in close collaboration with André Koene, Jean-Pierre Vanacker and Jean-Paul Vandewinckele. The vision is based on a phased transformability of the area, allowing its redevelopment and redesign to be carried out in a feasible, logical and future-oriented manner.
An important premise within the master plan was the exploration of different development scenarios, including an option in which the existing swimming pool is retained. The relationship with the River Leie forms a central pillar of the vision. The design strongly focuses on enhancing the connection with the water and improving the experiential quality of the riverbanks.
At the heart of the site lies a “central green”, conceived as an open and flexible space for recreation, social interaction and neighbourhood-oriented activities. This green lung functions both as a connecting element between the various functions and as a place where nature, play and relaxation come together.
Along Speiestraat, a gateway building is proposed, creating a recognizable entrance to the site. This building accommodates various community facilities and acts as a hinge between the urban structure and the open space of Oosthove. The façade architecture aligns with the existing urban context, allowing the volume to integrate harmoniously into its surroundings.
The master plan for Oosthove thus lays the foundation for a sustainable, recognisable and future-proof development of the site, in which landscape, water experience, public functions and architectural quality are coherently interconnected.
