A dune garden as a link between city & landscape

The construction of a new hotel next to the Nieuwlandplein in Nieuwpoort required an underground parking lot. A design competition was held for the layout of the roof garden above this parking lot.

With an enclosed garden, the competition design creates a link or transitional space between the dune landscape behind and the adjacent urban context. The park is surrounded by hardwood fencing that also incorporates the main entrance and the two exits to the underground parking lot. The enclosed garden will provide the necessary security for the visitor or walker, allowing him or her to withdraw from the nearby traffic. Despite this cultivated space anchored to the urban context, the visitor will still experience the natural atmosphere of the dune landscape. The sand hills, partly planted with dune grass, effortlessly evoke this atmosphere. A wooden decking path winds through the garden from the main entrance to the 2 exits of the underground parking lot. In the dune garden, movable chairs are arranged here and there, which will always give the garden a certain dynamism.
