Municipality of Oudenaarde
For the municipality of Londerzeel, a master plan was developed for the redevelopment of the cemetery in Steenhuffel.
We believe that a cemetery can be more than just a place of farewell. It can also serve as a green haven within the village fabric – a place where memory, silence, and nature come together. Guided by this vision, we designed the cemetery as a cemetery park: a space that offers comfort while inviting reflection and quiet walks.
In the design, we deliberately chose native planting and green structures that allow the architectural additions to blend naturally into the surrounding landscape. Hedges, trees, and lawns create a park-like atmosphere with room for contemplation. The existing scattering field and children’s graves were given a dignified place within the renewed composition.
The addition of a ceremonial farewell space and a memorial garden with wall reinforces the symbolism of transition and remembrance. The result is a harmonious environment that radiates tranquility while offering a recognizable green added value to the village.
With this redevelopment, we contribute to a sustainable, serene, and meaningful place for Steenhuffel.
