Commissioned by the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge, the study was conducted for the thorough renovation of the WWI German Military Cemetery in Langemark. The cemetery in Langemark is the final resting place of 44304 German soldiers and has about 130000 visitors annually. Known as the cemetery of war volunteers, the cemetery is also known today as the “Student Cemetery. Designed by architect Robert Tischler, the cemetery features a magnificent sculpture group of 4 grieving soldiers by German sculptor Emil Krieger. The cemetery was protected as a monument. 2014 marked the 100th anniversary of the First World War. The cemetery needed major renovation in view of the 100th anniversary. The containment stones of the mass grave, existing pavements and terraces were renewed. In addition, new pavements were laid, stairs refurbished and drains installed, which should also drain water at the mass grave, among other things. Lawns were repaved, hedges cleared and suitable access paving for the disabled. Also, a very important reconstruction was carried out. The disappeared wall of the honor plaza attached to the building was reconstructed and the sculpture group of the 4 mourning soldiers by sculptor Emil Krieger were returned to their original place.
