Bouwel dorp Cemetery

In the design process for the redevelopment of this protected cemetery in Bouwel, which focuses on the revaluation of heritage, we were guided by a thorough analysis of the funerary heritage. The discovery that yew massifs used to occupy a prominent place in this cemetery served as inspiration for the reintroduction of yew topiary.

These beautiful yew forms are spread throughout the cemetery, creating an atmosphere of timeless elegance and respect for history. They also create harmony and coherence across the entire cemetery.

The round shape, which recurs throughout the cemetery, was reintegrated into the design of a new spreading meadow. This spreading field, structured in a perfect circle, radiates tranquillity and provides a dignified place for scattering our loved ones. The integrated bench invites visitors to linger and reflect amid this serene setting. The circular shape not only symbolises the endless cycle of life, but also connects the past with the present.

In addition to the revival of historical elements, we aimed for a contemporary and refined look by introducing a modern urn monument. This monument, carefully integrated between the existing graves, not only serves as a memorial for the bereaved but also enhances the aesthetics of the cemetery.

Through the interplay of historical and modern elements, we have sought to create a rich, layered experience for visitors to the cemetery.

This redesign goes beyond the physical transformation of the space; it is a tribute to the past, a celebration of the present and an investment in a timeless future for the funerary heritage of this memorable site.
