The municipal government wants a village centre with more focus on greenery and experience.
The project area comprises 3 zones. The market, the area around the church and a yet to be created open space. A space that will be created by the demolition of two buildings next to the building that houses Ichtegem’s KSA.
The demolition of buildings always leaves a hole in the urban planning of a town or village. So I thought it was very important to give this hole a worthy filling in order to create not only a beautiful green park but also a strengthening of the urban development and the streetscape of Koekelarestraat. Walls were designed to close off the park from the busy street and provide it with the necessary security. The local council’s request to also provide a bus stop with covered cycle parking made the design brief all the more exciting. Together with the park walls, the bus stop with covered cycle shed was designed as a single entity and at the same time forms the gateway to the new public park. The municipal park of Ichtegem.
The choice of materials for this architecture was determined by looking at the immediate surroundings. The colour of the light yellow/brown brick matches the church and the beautiful building that houses Ichtegem’s KSA. Old and new blend harmoniously in the design. Creating the impression that everything has always been like this was the starting point in my design.
