Town Council Kapellen
A master plan has been developed for the Kapellen cemetery, proposing several important changes compared to the current situation. The cemetery will be fully greened with grass, in full compliance with legislation prohibiting the use of pesticides. Only the main axis and key connecting pathways will remain paved. The avenue along the main axis will be replanted, while informal plantings of tall trees will create a romantic park-like atmosphere.
The urn vaults and columbarium will be retained for the time being, but the cremation garden will gradually expand, eventually evolving into a new and more attractive form of ash interment spread throughout the cemetery. The first phase of this renewal was already carried out in 2017. In addition, a farewell area with four scattering meadows will be created on the open space to the left of the main axis. A woodland urn cemetery with naturally biodegradable urns will be established along Oude Heidestraat.
The master plan also provides a clear and appealing connection to the surrounding area, aiming to integrate daily life with the cemetery.
